The Research

The Fasting-Mimicking Diet in the Treatment of Cancer

A study entitled “Fasting-Mimicking Diet Is Safe and Reshapes Metabolism and Antitumor Immunity in Patients with Cancer” explored the effects of a diet mimicking fasting on cancer treatment in mice and humans. The researchers found that when mice were put on a repeating cycle of this special diet, it boosted the effectiveness of cancer treatments. This was achieved by altering the cellular metabolism and enhancing the body’s immune defenses against tumors.

To see if this would work in humans, they conducted a clinical trial with 101 patients. This special diet was found to be safe and resulted in lower levels of blood sugar and growth factors. These changes are thought to help increase the effectiveness of cancer treatments.

It reduced the number of immune cells that can suppress the body’s ability to fight cancer and increased the number of immune responses that can attack the tumor.
