Bifidobacterium longum Strains 1714® and 35642® In IBS

Stress can worsen the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Alongside IBS, anxiety and depression are often present. Bifidobacterium longum strains 1714® and 35642® are types of beneficial bacteria that have shown the potential to lower stress in healthy people and reduce symptoms in people with IBS.

A study looked at how the combination of these two bacteria strains affect the psychological and physical symptoms of IBS. It included 40 people diagnosed with IBS who also had mild to moderate anxiety and/or depression. Also, 57 healthy women with low to moderate stress levels were included for comparison. The IBS patients were given the combination probiotic daily for 8 weeks, followed by an 8-week break. Every 4 weeks, their IBS symptoms, mental health, stress hormone levels and inflammation markers in the blood were evaluated.

Compared to the healthy women, the IBS patients had lower stress hormone levels on waking, which is actually not a good thing. After treatment with the probiotic combination, their stress hormone levels normalized, and their IBS symptoms showed improvement. They also had lower scores for depression, anxiety, and inflammation. Sleep quality also improved. Interestingly, these improvements persisted even after the treatment was stopped, maintaining the beneficial effects up until the 16-week mark.

Researchers said the findings support the idea that stress plays a crucial role in triggering IBS symptoms. The positive effects of the probiotic combination on IBS symptoms appear to work by helping normalize the body’s stress response. Bifidobacterium longum 35624, a type of beneficial bacteria, has been shown to help lessen the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). These results were obtained from tightly controlled studies. However, there isn’t much information on how this bacteria works in real-world situations or in cases diagnosed with the latest criteria for IBS.

A recent study worked to understand how B. longum 35624 affects the severity of IBS and the quality of life for patients outside of controlled studies. As part of an observational study, 278 people diagnosed with IBS were seen by gastroenterologists in regular healthcare settings and were given one capsule of B. longum 35624 every day for 30 days. The severity of their IBS and their quality of life were measured at the beginning and end of the 30-day treatment.

At the start, 233 patients, mostly women, with an average age of 51, were included in the study. About half of these patients had moderate IBS, and nearly the same amount had severe IBS.

After 30 days of treatment, there was a notable decrease in IBS severity compared to the beginning of the study, with over half of the patients moving to lower severity categories or achieving remission. Patients’ quality of life also improved after the treatment, with nearly 64% of patients satisfied with the treatment.
